University Library
The University Library is a facility managed directly by the Office of the University President, entrusted with the following responsibilities: provide information technology services and support to all activities related to education, research, and outreach programs while contributing to the improvement of general welfare and quality of life.
The building of the University Library (UL) has a total area of 9134 m², in which is it archived collections of all areas of knowledge in various media, reference materials, special collections and also institutional documents that record the scientific production from UFSC. The institutional documents include but are not limited to undergraduate final reports, dissertations, theses, periodicals and books that are author by UFSC affiliates.
By providing services and content access based on the Internet, the University Library enables all users to access the UL’s site, which has recorded over 1,189,000 accesses since 2005.
CAPES Periodicals and Journals
Professors, researchers, students and staff at UFSC have access to works of science that have been published in international venues by means of the CAPES Portal to Periodicals. The CAPES Portal to Periodicals provides convenient access to articles from over 9640 international journal, published abroad and nationally, and over 90 data bases with abstracts. The portal was include a selection of important sources of academic information that are accessible from the web without any cost.
The University Library has a collection consisting of diverse documents, which is continually expanding, although not at the pace to fully meet the demands. The collection of periodicals has been greatly increased to a great extent because of the CAPES Portal to Periodicals.

In 2005, a date base for the library collection was made available, which allows academics to have easy access to more than 40,000 documents, from all areas of science and engineering, in diverse languages, but mostly in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

UFSC University Library is integrated with a number of information networks with the aim of enabling its users to have access to a large body of information, and also allow scientists and students from other parts of the country and abroad to have access to its collection. UFSC University Library is affiliated to the Brazilian Committee of University Libraries (CBBU). UFSC Library became the head library of the CBBU at the 20th National Symposium of University Libraries, which took place in Natal, RN, in 2004. For this reason, UFSC acted on behalf of CBBU in various committees, including the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology — IBICT, CAPES Portal of Periodicals, and INEP. UFSC has contributed to the development of policies for national information dissemination.
