Dates

  • Applications to Ph.D. degrees are received continuously.

Required Documents

The applications must include:

and the following documents, to be mailed after filling out the electronic application form:

  • Course transcript of the undergraduate degree.
  • Course transcript of the Master’s degree.
  • Copy of undergraduate degree diploma or statement of the fulfillment of the requirements. The document must have a seal of authenticity from a notary house, or can be validated at the admission’s office by presenting the original document.);
  • Copy of  the Master’s degree diploma or statement of fulfillment of the requirements before starting the Ph.D. program. The document must have a seal of authenticity from a notary house, or can be validated at the admission’s office by presenting the original document);
  • Copy of the Identity Card and CPF (with seal from notary house);
  • Copy of Birth Certificate (with seal from notary house);
  • Copy of the passport with photo and personal data, and a copy of the respective visa from the Immigration Office for foreign candidates (with seal from notary house);
  • A 3cm X 4cm photo;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • A recommendation letter from the Master’s dissertation advisor or two letters of recommendation from university professors, or qualified professionals, who can assess the potential of the candidate to pursue advanced studies  (a letter template for recommendation can be downloaded from: DOC – PDF).
  • Detailed work plan to be developed by the candidate, which should include motivation, problems of concern, justification, objectives, methodology, schedule, references, course work plan, and list of courses to be validated if any. The work plan should be elaborated in cooperation with the intended advisor, who should be a faculty member of the Graduate Program in Automation and Systems Engineering.

Applications Assessment and Selection

Applications are accepted continuously and assessed shortly after being received.

In the assessment, the admissions committee considers the merit and technical quality of the research project, the alignment of the candidate and the expertise of the advisor with the field of Automation and Systems Engineering, the academic record of the candidate, and the availability of the advisor to supervise the research work.

In order to grant scholarship, the committee consider the following criteria:

  • Curriculum Vitae: teaching assistance experience, undergraduate research work, publications, participation in technical events, proficiency in foreign languages.
  • Academic Record: grade point average (GPA), grades in basic and courses related to the intended Ph.D. research, course failures, time taken to complete the Master’s degree, grade attributed to the Master’s degree from the national regulation agency (CAPES) in case of Brazilian applicants.
  • Recommendation Letters: degree of acquaintance of the recommender, information given by the recommender about the potential of the candidate to pursue independent and advanced research.

Note:  foreign candidates, once accepted, should also present a students visa.
